I think that Theoden is loosely based on the Visigoth king Theodoric who fought with the Romans against the Huns at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. The Visigoths had a very tense relationship with the Romans and were terrified of the Huns (who had originally driven them out of their homeland in modern Ukraine) and it was as unclear if they would answer the Roman call to arms, but they did. I believe that the elderly Theodoric was killed leading a charge at the Hunnic flank, which routed them.

Bernard Hill created a Theoden that I actually preferred the book Theoden, which is saying a lot because book Theoden is my favorite character from literature apart from maybe Odysseus. Rest in peace.

I literally cried when I watched this movie. Its really sad to think that all he wanted was attention and a friend. And it’s also sad to think that the only reason joker was created was because everyone mistreated a man who just wanted to be happy and make everyone laugh
